Sara Softball was created in 2013 in loving memory of Sara Rose Hougom, a West Salem native and Western Technical College student, in hope to create a stronger community. Sara was shot and killed in her apartment on a Monday afternoon while getting ready to go to work by an unknown intruder. The tournament is organized and operated annually by the Chi Phi Fraternity - Pi Theta Chapter at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse.

Sara was a close friend to many of the Chi Phi Brothers and girlfriend to Chi Phi Alumnus Scott Hogan. The Pi Theta Chapter is honored to hold this annual charity softball tournament in memory of Sara and to promote violence awareness and prevention in La Crosse, Wisconsin and its surrounding communities.

The proceeds from this year's tournament will benefit the Sara Rose Hougom Foundation a newly formed local nonprofit. This organization was founded by members of the Chi Phi Fraternity and those close to Sara in 2015 as a way to not only remember Sara, but also to prevent violence within the La Crosse community. The proceeds will be used to sponsor events for at risk youth with the Boys and Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
